During last several years the Softswitch technology has been actively discussed. New and traditional operators, including the operators of the IP telephony, test Softswitch systems, considering them from the point of view of wide use in communication networks and at the same time improving the technical background for the implementation of such systems.

The article overviews main conditions for implementation of Softswitch systems, and a role and place of main protocols of the new generation network.

Similar process was witnessed in computer industry, when IBM introduced the hardware interfaces and detached the controlling software module from the hardware implementation.

When building new network architecture, investing shifts from highly specialized equipment (PBX, routers) to the equipment, forming a multi-service network, because specialized media and telephone resources are located only at the control level
