Modern Day Communication Networks and Softswitch Technologies

During last several years the Softswitch technology has been actively discussed. New and traditional operators, including the operators of the IP telephony, test Softswitch systems, considering them from the point of view of wide use in communication networks and at the same time improving the technical background for the implementation of such systems.

The article overviews main conditions for implementation of Softswitch systems, and a role and place of main protocols of the new generation network.
Network has the divided connection level control and the level of information transfer The emerging trend of switching from vertically integrated business model to a model, which is built on accessibility of the full packet of services, independently from the way of access through the universal information transfer network, leads to a new network architecture, which gradually becomes a recognized standard in a telecommunication community. Under this architecture a classic telephone hub “brakes” into components, related to each other by open “vertical” interfaces. Similar process was witnessed in computer industry, when IBM introduced the hardware interfaces and detached the controlling software module from the hardware implementation.
Switch to a horizontally integrated networks, which had the level of information transfer disconnected from the control level, is the most important step allowing expanding the group of unified network resources and increasing general effectiveness of the operator activity. When building new network architecture, investing shifts from highly specialized equipment (PBX, routers) to the equipment, forming a multi-service network, because specialized media and telephone resources are located only at the control level
