Asterisk 1.8 PBX

Asterisk 1.8 PBX

Open Source Asterisk PBX 1.8 release within Long-Term Support (LTS) commitment The release of the 1.8 version as an open source VoIP project targeting its own long term support (LTS) project.

As to contrary other releases, which are supported for up to one year, PBX LTS releases are maintained and supported for minimum of four years. Therefore the 1.4 release, which appeared in 2006, is currently considered to be LTS version, having in line the more updated 1.6 version designed to be a regular release. The migration to an LTS concept is a fresh way of approach of the project as a whole.
Company’s Digium officials said just year ago, that 1.6 version is going to be the background for further releases and that the release of 1.8 is expected. Digium is the basic commercial sponsor of the project.
With the release of 1.6 versions, the target of the project is initiating the releases with updated features faster. However, there are growing user complains about too many releases to circulate and it is too difficult to choose which branch to use. The solution of company is a new attitude, where products are separated into feature and LTS releases.
The Asterisk PBX 1.8 LTS expected release is to be available in 3rd quarter of 2010 and it is going to include many innovations and existing features. One also can be interested in finding out about such extra features as Asterisk Key, GUI and Voicemail.
One of the new declared features of the version 1.8 is a function of a reverse display of a call indicating the identity of respondent on opposite end of actual chat.
Next brand new innovation expected to feature in 1.8 version is support for the addressing system of IPv6. IPv6 is getting of that increasing importance, once the current address space of IPv4 closing the depletion borders in the next few years. 1.8 will be equipped by more ISDN support features for better performance on European phone systems that works in ISDN standard.
Project ‘’Asterisk Now’’
There is also progressing commitments on the next generation of the Asterisk Now project, which offers a bundled release of the program with an operating systems GUI and Linux . The Asterisk Now was launched 2007 and is currently at its version 1.5 release, which came out in 2008.
The future soon expected version will update the underlying CentOS Linux distribution that it implements, as well as the GUI. Moreover, the new release will integrate the PBX1.6 update. Company is not certain yet what number the new release of Asterisk Now will be tagged upon to be introduced .
